In order to realize the long-term stable operation of wind turbine blades, it is necessary to apply protective coatings on the blades, so that the blades have excellent weather resistance, wear resistance, antifouling and other properties. This paper introduces the research progress of various synthetic polymer materials in the field of wind turbine blade protection, including polyurethane, fluoropolymer with excellent weather resistance and low surface energy, and acrylic resin with good adhesion and strong adhesion. These polymers are used to prepare single or multi-layer protective coatings in the form of single component or composite materials, in order to make blade coatings have excellent protective performance.

As a clean and renewable energy, wind energy has attracted more and more attention all over the world. The effective use of wind energy helps to realize the diversification of energy structure and reduce environmental pollution. By the end of 2009, China's wind power grid has reached 16.13 million KW, a year-on-year increase of 92%. The rapid expansion of the wind power market is bound to drive the rapid growth of the demand for related devices and equipment. Ensuring the quality of these devices is particularly important for promoting the development of wind power.

As an important part of wind turbine, wind turbine blade is the key to ensure its long-term and stable operation in harsh environment. The length of wind turbine blade can reach 60m, The lightning protection of blades has been reported in many literatures, but on the other hand, because the manufacturing materials of wind turbine blades, such as epoxy resin glass fiber reinforced plastics, are difficult to keep intact after being attacked by dust, ultraviolet and rainstorm all the year round, it is necessary to apply protective coating on the blade surface to improve the service life of blades and reduce or even realize zero maintenance of blades for more than 20 years.

This paper mainly introduces several kinds of polymer resins used as protective coating materials for wind turbine blades, such as polyurethane, fluororesin, acrylic resin, etc., and prospects their research direction and development.
