Why is furfural resin a treasure? The main reason is that it is derived from corn cobs, a waste product of agricultural production, and is transformed by chemical processing technology. 1. Characteristics of furfural resin
Furfural, formally known as 2-furancarboxaldehyde, is the same compound as saccharaldehyde. Its standard chemical name is α-furancarboxaldehyde, which is a derivative formed when the hydrogen atom at the 2-position of the furan ring is replaced by an aldehyde group.
Furfural resin is a furan resin polymer obtained by polycondensation or copolymerization with furfuryl alcohol or furfural as the main raw material. It is a natural resin of plant origin, and is highly regarded for its excellent high temperature resistance, outstanding chemical resistance, and excellent electrical insulation properties. Although its adhesive properties are slightly lacking, it can be reinforced with glass fibers, which can effectively improve its mechanical strength. Its main characteristics include:
① High temperature stability: under high temperature conditions, furfural resin shows good stability and is not easy to melt or deform.
② Corrosion resistance: good acid and alkali resistance and chemical corrosion.
③ Water resistance: Furfural resin is not easy to absorb water by moisture, thus maintaining its stable physical and chemical properties.
④ Easy processing: The resin is easy to be processed and molded, and can be processed into various shapes and specifications by hot pressing, injection molding and other means.

2. Preparation of furfural resin
The preparation of furfural originally originated from the process of heating rice bran with dilute acid, hence the name. The production of furfural mainly relies on agricultural by-products such as corn cobs as renewable raw materials, which are environmentally friendly and sustainable. In agricultural production, corn cobs are usually regarded as waste, but through chemical processing techniques, they can be converted into high-value furfural for effective utilization of waste, which is an important advancement in the field of green chemistry. At present, there are several common preparation methods regarding furfural resin, mainly as follows:
① Acid-catalyzed method: this method is that furfuryl alcohol or furfural first forms a linear polymer under acid catalysis, and then continues to undergo double-bond polymerization in the presence of acid to form an insoluble, non-fusible cross-linking material. Before curing, the resin is a black viscous liquid, which can be hardened by heating with p-toluenesulfonic acid treatment.
② Alkali catalytic method: the oxidation reaction of cellulose is catalyzed by alkaline catalyst under appropriate conditions to generate furfural, and then polymerization reaction to form furfural resin.
③ Acid and alkali combined method: combining the two methods of acid catalysis and alkali catalysis, first acid and alkali treatment to extract cellulose, and then oxidation reaction and polymerization reaction to prepare furfural resin.
High-temperature method: Under high-temperature conditions, cellulose is directly oxidized to generate furfural, and then polymerization reaction is carried out to prepare furfural resin.
⑤ Enzyme method: use enzyme catalyst to catalyze the oxidation reaction of cellulose under mild condition to generate furfural, and then carry out polymerization reaction to form furfural resin.
In addition, furfural can replace formaldehyde and phenol in the acid or alkali catalyzed condensation, the manufacture of phenolic resins. Meanwhile, many furfural derivatives have strong bactericidal ability.
3.Application of Furfural Resin
As an important chemical raw material, furfural resin is widely used in many fields because of its excellent performance.
① As furfural resin has good water resistance and weather resistance, it is used as an adhesive in the wood processing industry, which can enhance the strength of the connection between wood and improve the durability of wood products. It is often widely used in the production of outdoor furniture, doors, windows, flooring and other wood products.
② Because of its good adhesion and drying properties, it can form tough and durable coatings, so furfural resin can be used as a raw material for paints and inks, and is widely used in anticorrosive and decorative coatings for automobiles, ships, machinery, and other industrial fields.
In addition, furfural resins can be used to produce other chemical raw materials, such as phenolic resins, urea-formaldehyde resins and so on.
