Silicone resin application prospects in the field of powder coatings

1、High temperature resistant powder application
Silicone resin has excellent thermo-oxidative stability/high temperature resistance, which originates from several unique chemical mechanisms:
✦ High Si-O-Si bonding energy: Silicone-oxygen bonding energy of 445KJ/mol, compared to carbon polymer has a higher bonding energy, not easy to break.
✦Si-O-Si main chain shielding function: Si-O-Si main chain can shield the oxidation of organic groups by oxygen, making Si-R (organic groups) more stable.
✦ Slow thermal degradation rate: Compared with powder coating conventional system resins, silicone resins start to degrade at a high temperature and decompose more slowly.
✦ Formation of inorganic coatings after oxidative degradation: Silicone resins generally begin to decompose at 300°C. What remains after decomposition is still a structurally stable Si-O-Si structure, which can still be used as a protective coating layer.
2、Super weathering powder application
The wavelength of sunlight spectral distribution on the earth's surface is more than 300nm, and most organic resins are very sensitive to the light in this wavelength region, which is the root cause of the poor weathering of organic resins; and there is no double-bonded structure within the chemical structure of methyl silicone, which is hardly absorbed by ultraviolet rays, so the influence of sunlight on silicone resins is relatively small, which is the main reason for excellent weathering of silicone resin coatings. In the field of traditional paints, most silicone resin products have a service life of up to several decades in the natural environment, and have been used in the field of protection of building materials, thin coating of coiled steel, automobile parts, and outdoor steel structures with mature experience.
3、Insulating powder application
Conventional epoxy insulating powders are adequate in terms of insulating properties, but silicone resins exhibit more than just insulating properties in this area. Silicone resins have three unique properties:
✦ Most silicone resins do not contain polar groups, so their relative dielectric constant and dielectric loss angle tangent fluctuate very little over different operating temperature ranges.
✦Silicone resins have a low coefficient of thermal deformation - little change in material dimensions with temperature. ✦Silicone resins have good water resistance and water repellency due to the characteristics of their surface groups.
These three points make silicone resin products not only maintain stable insulating properties under high temperature and high humidity, but also have excellent insulating properties even after it has been continuously heat-resistant, which makes it have obvious performance advantages in practical application environments, no matter whether it is used for power batteries with long-time rapid charging and discharging or motor electric control parts working in long-term high-temperature environments.
