Fumed silica is an amorphous silica product produced by high-temperature hydrolysis of organic halogenated silanes in a hydroxide flame, with a primary particle size between 7 and 40 nanometers, and a specific surface area generally greater than 100 m2/g. The product is of very high purity, with a silica content of not less than 99.8%. Fumed silica has been industrially produced since the 1940s, and no cases of silicosis caused by inhalation of fumed silica have been found in the past decades of industrial production. The International Association for Research on Cancer (IARC) states that there is not enough evidence to prove that synthetic amorphous silica is carcinogenic to human beings or experimental animals, on the contrary, IARC has included crystalline silica among the carcinogenic substances, in addition to the European Community's directive document (67/548/EEC), which also points out that amorphous silica is not a dangerous substance. Due to its good stability, physiological inertness, thickening and so on, it can be widely used in the field of daily necessities.
Fumed silica is a very important and effective additive in body care products, where a small amount can have a significant effect. Due to the existence of many hydroxyl groups on the surface of fumed silica, the interaction between particles is relatively strong, in the liquid system, highly dispersed fumed silica in the system is easy to interact with each other to form a three-dimensional network, which makes the viscosity of the system to increase, and effectively prevents the flow of the system when it is static, and when applied to the appropriate shear force, the three-dimensional network is destroyed, so that the system has a liquid flow shape, when the shear force is eliminated, the network is back to the system, and the system has a liquid flow shape. When the shear force is eliminated, the network can be formed again, and thus the system can form a “gel” again. Therefore, it can play a thixotropic and thickening function in toothpaste, sunscreen, masks and other gel or paste products, the dosage is generally 1 to 3%, some as high as 4 to 8%. In such as pearlescent nail polish or spray-type care products, fumed silica mainly plays a role in suspension, making the various components of which are evenly dispersed in the system to prevent settling and increase the storage stability of the system. In hair care products, fumed silica also has a wide range of applications. For example, anti-dandruff shampoo contains some active ingredients such as selenium sulfide, salicylic acid, sulfur, zinc compounds, etc., most of these ingredients need to form a good dispersion and suspension in the system, adding fumed silica can meet the requirements. In water-in-oil products, there is generally a greasy feeling, after adding fumed silica, it can reduce the greasy, sticky feeling. In oil-in-water products, fumed silica can improve the temperature and pH stability of the product. In sunscreen oil, adding surface-treated fumed silica can not only improve the texture, but also improve its water resistance, and the general dosage is 0.5-3%. Surface-treated fumed silica can improve the moisture resistance of creams and gels, which is very favorable to lipsticks, eyebrow oils, cosmetics as well as whitening creams and sunscreens.
