Petroleum resin (hydrocarbon resin) is a thermoplastic resin produced from C5 and C9 fractions by-products of petroleum cracking through pretreatment, polymerization, distillation and other processes, which is not a polymer but an oligomer with a molecular weight between 300 and 3000. Petroleum resin is named because of its origin as a petroleum derivative. It has the characteristics of low acid value, good miscibility, resistance to water, ethanol and chemicals, chemical stability to acid and alkali, and good viscosity regulation and thermal stability. Petroleum resins are generally not used alone, but as accelerators, regulators, modifiers and other resins together.
1. Characteristics of Petroleum Resin
Petroleum resin is named because of the source of petroleum derivatives, the softening point of petroleum resin is generally 80-140 ℃, the relative density is 0.970 ~ 0.975, the relative molecular mass is less than 3 × 10 ^ 3. It has the characteristics of low acid value, good miscibility, resistance to water, ethanol, and chemicals, etc., and it has the chemical stability of acid and alkali, and it has the characteristics of regulating the viscosity and good thermal stability. Petroleum resin is generally not used alone, but as an accelerator, regulator, modifier and other resins used together, and has the characteristics of regulating viscosity and good thermal stability. Therefore, petroleum resin can completely replace rosin resin, terpene resin for hot melt adhesives and pressure sensitive adhesive tackifiers, play a role in improving wettability and adhesion.
The emergence of petroleum resin also solved the natural rosin and terpene resin source is limited, poor thermal stability, expensive and easy to aging and so on. And the performance of rosin resin modified hot melt adhesive can be achieved by using petroleum resin with a mass fraction of 60%.
2. Application of petroleum resin 
(1)Coating field
Coating for road marking and road delineation, petroleum resin has good adhesion to concrete or asphalt pavement, and good abrasion resistance and water resistance, good affinity with inorganic substances, easy coating, good weather resistance, fast drying, high firmness, and can improve the physical and chemical properties of the layer, and improve the UV resistance and weather resistance. For example, in the formulation of phenolic varnish, the use of C9 petroleum resin in equal parts to replace the rosin-modified phenolic resin and rosin calcium resin, not only product performance up to standard, but also reduce the cost of nearly three-quarters.
(2) Adhesive industry
Petroleum resins play a key role in providing adhesive properties. Whether it is natural rubber, synthetic rubber, or polyolefins, polyacrylates, etc., the addition of petroleum resins significantly improves the adhesive stability, creep resistance, and heat resistance of these polymers. A typical example is the mixing of petroleum resins with SBS thermoplastic elastomer block copolymers, which can be produced for the production of pressure-sensitive bonding tape or pressure-sensitive adhesive adhesive viscous mixture.
(3) Rubber Industry
Rubber mainly uses low softening point C5 petroleum resins, C5/C9 copolymer resins and DCPD resins. Such resins and natural rubber pellets have good mutual solubility, no major impact on the rubber vulcanization process, rubber in the addition of petroleum resins can play a viscosity, reinforcement, softening effect. In particular, the addition of C5/C9 copolymer resin can not only increase the adhesion between the rubber grains, but also improve the adhesion between the rubber grains and the cord, for radial tires and other high demand for rubber products.
(4)Ink industry
Petroleum resin for ink, mainly high softening point C9 petroleum resin, DCPD resin. The addition of petroleum resin to ink can play a role in spreading color, fast drying, brightening effect, and improving printing performance.
(5)Other fields
It can be used as electric insulating material, because of its good dielectric properties and thermal stability, it is suitable for the insulating layer of cables, wires and other electrical equipment.
In the field of transportation, petroleum resin can be used to manufacture road marking paint, bridge anticorrosive coatings, etc., to provide effective protective measures for the maintenance of roads and bridges. In addition, it can be used as an additive for automotive coatings to improve the weathering and chemical resistance of coatings and protect the surface of automobiles from harsh environments.
In the paint industry, C9 petroleum resin with high softening point, DCPD resin and C5/C9 copolymerization resin are mainly used. The addition of petroleum resin to paints can increase the glossiness of paints, and improve the adhesion, hardness, acid and alkali resistance of the paint film.
