Liu Yun of Nanjing Medical University and other researchers found that the new coronavirus does not infect the human reproductive system!

Previously, Professor Fan caibin and others from Suzhou Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing Medical University published papers that ACE2 was highly expressed in the kidney and testis, which may be the target of sars-cov-2 attack, thus affecting the urinary system and reproductive system. Then, by single cell sequencing, we also found that the spermatogonia, stromal cells and Sertoli cells in testis all expressed ACE2 highly, which further indicated that the reproductive system might be the target of sars-cov-2. Based on this, researchers from Nanjing Medical University and its affiliated hospital carried out new coronavirus related tests on semen and testicle biopsy samples of patients with covid-19, and found no evidence of sars-cov-2 infection. The related achievements were published on medrxiv, a medical preprint platform, under the title of "detection of 2019 new coronavirus in men and experimental biology specialty of covid-19 patients". The study included 13 patients with covid-19 admitted from January 31 to March 14, 2020, including 12 convalescent patients (22-38 years old) and one deceased (67 years old). During this period, their clinical characteristics, laboratory examination, chest CT scan and outcome data were recorded. Real time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to detect sars-cov-2 in semen or testicular biopsy samples to determine whether the new coronavirus would attack the male reproductive system. All patients did not have severe covid-19 pneumonia. As of March 14, 2020, 10 patients have been discharged from hospital, and the remaining 2 patients have entered the recovery period. Sars-cov-2 RNA was negative in the semen samples of all 12 convalescent patients. Another 67 year old patient died on March 10, 2020, and his testicular biopsy tissue samples were negative for viral RNA. In summary, the study suggests that the new coronavirus may not infect the human reproductive system, so it will not infect others through sexual transmission. Although the study only included data of 13 patients, it was the first time to test the reproductive system related samples of patients with covid-19, providing the most direct evidence for whether sars-cov-2 would have sexual transmission. We look forward to further research by qualified scientists.
