Application of silicone resin in coatings

As a kind of polymer material, silicone resin is widely used because of its excellent heat resistance, cold resistance, radiation resistance, hydrophobicity, contamination resistance, chemical corrosion resistance and other special properties. However, the application of pure silicone resin is limited due to its long curing time, low adhesion and low mechanical strength at high temperature. Since the molecular structure of silicone resin still retains hydroxyl and other active groups, this provides more possibilities for the modification of silicone resin.
As the main film-forming material of silicone resin coatings, silicone resin has received extensive attention in its modification. In this paper, the research progress of modified silicone resin in the fields of high temperature resistant coatings, wear-resistant coatings and antifouling coatings is reviewed.
High temperature resistant coating
The difference between silicone resin and organic polymer is that the bond energy of Si-O bond in silicone resin is higher than that of C-C bond in ordinary organic polymer. Silicon atom and oxygen atom form d-p π bond, so silicone resin has good thermal stability.
Wear-resistant coating
There are many methods to modify silicone resin, such as changing the organic groups on the side chain, grafting the main chain, etc. These methods can improve the scratch resistance of silicone resin coating. Now, using nanotechnology to modify has a good prospect.
Antifouling paint
The excellent antifouling performance of silicone resin also depends on its unique chemical structure. Silicon resin contains a large amount of silicon hydroxyl. During the film forming process, the silicon hydroxyl is dehydrated and condensed to form a huge network structure, thus forming an extremely dense paint film. This is also the reason for low surface energy and low surface tension of silicone paint film. The surface contact angle of the modified silicone resin can reach 150 °, which can make the coating have excellent hydrophobicity and theoretically excellent antifouling property.
