Silica silicone composite super hydrophobic coating: sprayable and moldable

Superhydrophobic surface (coating) plays an irreplaceable role in drag reduction, energy conservation, anti icing and anti biological deposition applications. Recently, many bottom-up or top-down preparation strategies have been developed to construct functional superhydrophobic coatings with low surface energy and rough surface structure. However, the complexity of the surface construction process of micro nano structures and the wear characteristics of micro nano rough structures greatly restrict the preparation cost and service life of superhydrophobic coatings. It is an important development direction in this field to develop simple strategies to achieve functional coatings with high wear resistance, easy repair and renewable superhydrophobic surfaces.

Recently, the research team of Professor Shaker A. Meguid of the University of Toronto, Canada, took nano silica particles and silicone resin as raw materials, based on simple industrial spraying technology or traditional resin molding technology, and simply realized the construction of multifunctional composite super hydrophobic coating. At the same time, the research team carried out a detailed characterization and analysis of the relationship between the composition of the two types of super hydrophobic coating systems and the surface hydrophobicity; The system test shows that the superhydrophobic coating constructed in this research achievement has excellent elasticity, durability and renewable performance of superhydrophobic surface, and has broad practical industrial application prospects.
