Resistance to erosion and oxidation
Ultra high temperature ceramics (UHTCs) are a class of emerging materials with great potential for application in extreme environments. They can be used above 2073K and maintain excellent high-temperature oxidation resistance and thermal shock resistance in ceramic matrix composites. The excellent oxidation resistance and thermal shock resistance at high temperatures make ultra-high temperature ceramic materials another widely used material in C/C high-temperature oxidation resistant composite coatings, following SiC. Ultra high temperature ceramics mainly consist of carbides and borides of refractory metals, such as ZrC, HfC, ZrB2, HfB2, etc.
