What types of antioxidant coatings are mainly suitable for evaluating the bonding strength of indentation test method
Hard coating
Ceramic coating: such as ceramic thermal barrier coatings used on high-temperature components such as aircraft engine blades. These coatings have high hardness and brittleness, making it difficult to test the bonding strength using tensile testing and other methods. The indentation test method can evaluate the bonding strength between the coating and the substrate by applying pressure on the coating surface to form an indentation and observing the cracking, peeling, and other conditions around the indentation.
Metal hard coating: Coatings such as titanium nitride (TiN) and chromium nitride (CrN) prepared by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) or physical vapor deposition (PVD) have high hardness and good wear resistance, and are commonly used on surfaces such as machining tools. The indentation test can effectively detect the degree of adhesion between such coatings and the tool substrate.
Thin film coating
Nanofilm coating: For example, some nanoscale anti-oxidation films used on the surface of microelectronic devices, with a thickness typically ranging from tens to hundreds of nanometers. Due to its small size, it is difficult to accurately evaluate the bonding strength using traditional mechanical testing methods. The indentation test method can use a nanoindentation instrument to precisely control the load and displacement of the indenter, test the bonding performance between the nanofilm coating and the substrate, and analyze its mechanical response at a small scale.
Organic thin film coating: Some organic polymer films with antioxidant properties, such as polyimide films, are commonly used in fields such as electronic circuits and optical devices. The indentation test can infer the bonding strength between the film and the substrate by measuring the depth, shape, and deformation of the indentation around the indentation without damaging the overall structure of the film.
Multi layer composite coating
Gradient coating: The composition and structure of this type of coating exhibit continuous gradient changes in the thickness direction, such as ceramic metal gradient coatings prepared by thermal spraying and other techniques on metal substrates, used to improve the high temperature resistance, oxidation resistance, and thermal shock resistance of components. The indentation test can be used to test coatings at different positions and analyze the changes in bonding strength from the substrate to different areas of the surface.
Sandwich structure coating: composed of alternating coatings of different materials, such as metal ceramic metal sandwich structure coating, commonly used in occasions that require a combination of multiple properties. The indentation test can evaluate the bonding condition between different layers and determine the bonding stability of the entire coating system through indentation testing between different layers.
