Polysilazane: The "Hidden Champion" in Advanced Materials

Recently, as global competition in new materials technology intensifies, polysilazane, a cutting-edge material, is transitioning from laboratory research to industrial application, emerging as a "hidden champion" in high-end manufacturing. This organic-inorganic hybrid polymer, featuring a backbone of Si-N bonds, showcases remarkable properties such as ultra-high temperature resistance, oxidation resistance, and corrosion resistance, making it highly promising in fields like aerospace, semiconductors, and new energy.

A pivotal breakthrough came during the development of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics torch, "Flying Yang." Shanghai Cubic Chemical and Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical jointly developed the third-generation polysilazane resin, capable of withstanding temperatures up to 1,200°C. This innovation addressed the longstanding challenge of traditional resins failing above 800°C, enabling the torch's shell to achieve "carbon-neutral combustion" and filling a critical gap in China's ultra-high-temperature specialty resin sector.

On the industrialization front, polysilazane's applications continue to expand. As a ceramic precursor, it decomposes into Si₃N₄ and SiC ceramics, which are now used in aero-engine components. In protective coatings, a company's polysilazane-based coating allows metal parts to maintain stability at 700°C while enhancing corrosion resistance by over tenfold. Additionally, Cubic Chemical's "negative carbon technology" modifies polysilazane with CO₂, enabling waste gas recycling and offering a new pathway for low-carbon transformation in the materials industry.

According to industry analysis, the global polysilazane market is growing at an annual rate of 16.5%, though technology has long been dominated by European and U.S. firms. However, with the establishment of institutions like the Jiujiang Silicon-based New Materials Industry Research Institute and technological breakthroughs by companies such as Cubic Chemical, China now possesses the capability for large-scale production. Looking ahead, with the explosive growth of industries like energy storage and semiconductors, polysilazane is poised to become a "strategic pivot" unlocking trillion-yuan markets.
