Organic Polyborosilazane IOTA 9120: Ushering in a New Era of SiBCN Ceramic Preparation

Recently, a liquid precursor polymer named Organic Polyborosilazane (Ceramizable Precursor Polymer) IOTA 9120 has made a splash in the field of materials science. This innovative material offers a brand-new approach to the preparation of SiBCN ceramics with its unique composition and properties.

IOTA 9120 is composed of repeating Si - N units and Si - N - B units. It can serve as both a thermosetting resin and a ceramic precursor. Under mild conditions, it can be pyrolyzed to produce SiBCN ceramic products with good temperature resistance. Its curing methods are flexible and diverse. It can undergo cross-linking curing at 120 - 180℃ in air or an inert atmosphere, and can also be cured through a hydrosilylation reaction using a platinum catalyst at 80 - 100℃, with a curing time generally ranging from 2 - 5 hours. The cured product, after high-temperature pyrolysis, forms amorphous ceramics below 1600℃ and begins to crystallize above this temperature. The composition of the ceramic product is closely related to the pyrolysis atmosphere.

The product boasts remarkable characteristics, including low viscosity, short curing time, diverse curing methods, high ceramic yield, and excellent adhesion to metals, ceramics, and graphite. It is easy to prepare SiBCN ceramics. In terms of technical parameters, it is a light-yellow liquid with a solid content of 99.9%, a molecular weight (Mn) between 700 - 900, and an appropriate viscosity. The ceramic yield of the cured product at 800℃ is over 50%, and the ceramic density ranges from 1.70 - 2.00 g/cm³.

In application fields, IOTA 9120 is widely used in ceramic matrix composites (CMCs), metal matrix composites, high-temperature adhesives, anti-corrosion coatings, high-temperature oxidation-resistant ceramic coatings, ceramic preform impregnants, thermosetting resins, and organic-inorganic hybrid materials, with a very broad market prospect.
