Research on the application of acrylic resin in epoxy resin coatings

Epoxy resin is widely used in the field of anti-corrosion coatings due to its excellent mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and good adhesion. However, epoxy resin is prone to defects during the curing process, which reduces the shielding performance of the coating. Therefore, it is usually modified or other substances are added to improve its protective performance. At present, many studies start from the molecular structure and modify curing agents or epoxy resins. Zang Jiaqing et al. [8] modified epoxy resins with carboxylated nitrile rubber to improve impact strength and tensile shear strength. Yao Jiuti et al. [9] improved the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of coatings by modifying epoxy resin with fluorosilicon, but this method has complex processes. Physical modification enables the formation of a blended structure between epoxy resin and added substances, thereby improving the performance of composite materials; Domestic and foreign researchers usually use additives such as synthetic rubber to improve the mechanical properties of epoxy resin, but it often leads to a decrease in the performance of other aspects of epoxy resin coatings. Researchers have also improved the performance of coatings by adding fillers such as nanoclay and epoxy resin matrix to form clay/epoxy resin composite materials. However, the addition of fillers usually affects the coating performance due to their poor dispersibility.

Thermoplastic acrylic resin has advantages such as good water and chemical resistance, color and light retention, and fast drying, as it does not undergo further cross-linking during the film-forming process. This is complementary to epoxy resin. Previous studies have shown that the performance of chemically modified acrylic epoxy anti-corrosion coatings can be improved. However, this type of research involves chemical modification and synthesis reaction with epoxy resin, which makes the operation relatively complex. This article synthesizes acrylic resin and directly adds it to epoxy resin, improving the hydrophobicity and mechanical properties of epoxy resin coatings through physical modification, and enhancing their anti-corrosion effect.
