Organosilicone resins are the lesser known of the three main silicone products, which include silicone rubber and silicone fluids. Organosilicone resins are complex, highly branched oligosiloxanes that are produced by exposing various silicone precursors to a hydrolytic condensation process. The end products are supplied in the form of sheet resins and solvent-based or solvent-free liquids. Silicone resins are extremely versatile and safe products with multiple uses in a wide range of industries as adhesives, sealants, insulators or weatherproofing additives. Silicone resins offer excellent electrical insulation, ultraviolet (UV) protection, water resistance and heat resistance.
Silicones are most often associated with silicone fluids and rubber products that are commonly used as sealants and mold release agents. However, silicone resins are probably the most useful of the silicone family of products and can be used in many industrial and household applications. Silicone resins are all formulated on the basis of silicone compositions that exhibit excellent adhesion, heat, UV and barrier properties. These resins are available as solvent-based or solvent-free liquids or dry flakes.
Some silicone resin formulations can withstand temperatures in excess of 1,380 degrees Fahrenheit (750 degrees Celsius), which makes them ideal adhesives for coatings used in boilers, cookware, fireplace components and automotive engine parts. These resins also have excellent electrical insulating properties, making them ideal for coating motor windings, coils and resistors. These insulating properties have made silicone resins a standard coating on electronic circuit boards. Fiberglass fabrics coated with silicone resins are also widely used as wire insulation.
The high adhesion and weatherability of silicone resins make them the perfect exterior coating additive for a wide variety of applications. Silicone resins exhibit very good resistance to UV degradation and are the standard binder for highly durable coatings used as protective coatings for exterior steel structures. Certain grades of resins are also used as the basis for anti-fouling paints used on ship hulls. Their excellent waterproofing properties are utilized in the construction industry, where they are used as binders for many masonry sealants and exterior paints. The UV-resistant properties of the resins further enhance these products, as they do not become brittle or yellow from prolonged exposure to sunlight.
When used and stored correctly, silicone resins are a safe product. Even under extreme overheating conditions, the resins will not burn, discolor, or release harmful fumes. However, these resins do require the use of catalysts and care needs to be taken when mixing the product. Some products are also flammable before curing; raw materials should be kept away from fire, direct sunlight and chemical sources.
