Is the production cost of DLC coating high?

Hits: 83 img

The production cost of DLC coating is relatively high, mainly reflected in the following aspects:
Equipment investment cost: The preparation of DLC coatings usually requires advanced technologies such as physical vapor deposition (PVD) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD), which require high-precision and high vacuum professional coating equipment, such as magnetron sputtering equipment, ion plating equipment, plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition equipment, etc. The purchase cost of these devices is high, generally ranging from tens of thousands to millions of yuan, and they also require regular maintenance, upkeep, and equipment updates, which undoubtedly increases production costs.
Raw material cost: Although the main component of DLC coating is carbon, in order to achieve good coating performance, special carbon source materials such as acetylene, methane and other gases, as well as auxiliary materials and gases such as hydrogen and argon, are often required. These raw materials have high purity requirements and are relatively expensive. Moreover, during the coating process, the utilization rate of raw materials is usually not very high, resulting in some waste and further increasing the cost of raw materials.
Process control cost: The preparation process of DLC coating is relatively complex, and the control requirements for process parameters are very strict. Accurate control of multiple parameters such as deposition temperature, gas flow rate, pressure, and power is required to ensure the quality and stability of the coating performance. This requires professional technicians to operate and monitor, as well as extensive process testing and optimization to find the optimal combination of process parameters. In addition, in order to ensure the quality of the coating, various tests and analyses need to be conducted on the coating, such as hardness testing, friction coefficient testing, thickness testing, adhesion testing, etc. These testing equipment and testing costs will also increase costs.
Production efficiency cost: The deposition rate of DLC coating is relatively slow, and the production cycle is long. For example, preparing DLC coatings on some automotive components may take several hours or even tens of hours to complete a batch of production. Lower production efficiency means lower output per unit time, leading to an increase in production costs per unit product.
However, with the continuous advancement of technology and the expansion of market size, the production cost of DLC coatings is gradually decreasing.
